Cambodia Confirms Troops Still Holding Mount Trop as Thailand Cannot Raise Flag on Sovereign Territory
Phnom Penh, July 26, 2025 — Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defense stated today that as of 11:11 a.m., Thailand has not succeeded in raising its national flag on Mount Trop, a territory recognized as sovereign Cambodian land. Cambodian armed forces continue to stand firm in defense of the area, resisting the ongoing aggression by Thai troops, who reportedly attempted to assert control over the site.
Lieutenant General Maly Socheata, spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense, vehemently dismissed false reports circulating on social media suggesting that Thai forces had taken control of Mount Trop or raised their flag there. She emphasized that Cambodian troops remain in full control of their territory and are actively defending against perceived aggression.
“The situation remains tense, but I want to clarify the false information being spread. As of now, Cambodia’s sovereignty over Mount Trop is intact, and our forces are steadfast,” Lieutenant General Socheata stated at a press conference held this morning. She also confirmed that Cambodian troops responded to hostilities with appropriate measures, including firing at enemy positions to prevent further encroachment, which caused Thai forces to retreat.
This marks the third day of what Cambodia describes as a “war of aggression” conducted by Thailand against its sovereign territory. The incident has escalated tensions along the border, with Cambodia asserting that its military will not relinquish any territory and will defend its sovereignty at all costs.
The Ministry of National Defense reiterated Cambodia’s united front, expressing unwavering support for its armed forces and government. The statement highlighted that the Royal Government, the armed forces, and the Cambodian people are committed to defending the nation’s territorial integrity and will continue to resist external threats.
Cambodian officials also called on the international community to monitor the situation and support peaceful resolution efforts, emphasizing the importance of respecting Cambodia’s sovereignty in accordance with international law.
As the situation remains highly volatile, both sides have called for restraint, but Cambodia confirmed its readiness to respond decisively to any further aggression. The government reiterated its commitment to protecting its national territory and urged Thailand to cease military actions and engage in diplomatic dialogue.
